Laminate brands in Malaysia and Singapore: a carpenter's guide

The laminate is the part of your cabinet you see and touch every day. Here are the brands you'll actually find in Malaysia and Singapore, what each is known for, and how to choose. Written by the team at Teddy Carpentry & Design, who work with these sheets every week.

First, what is high pressure laminate?

High pressure laminate (HPL) is a thin, hard sheet, usually under 1 mm, made by pressing layers of resin-soaked paper together under heat and high pressure. The top layer carries the design: a woodgrain, a solid colour, a stone look. We glue it onto the board: blockboard (木芯板) for doors and drawer fronts, plywood for the cabinet body.

It is the most common finish for quality carpentry in Malaysia and Singapore because it stands up to scratches, heat and stains better than the cheaper options, and it comes in hundreds of designs.

The black line, and how solid-core laminate removes it

Look at the edge of an ordinary laminate sheet and you'll see a thin dark line. That's the core: layers of brown kraft paper soaked in dark phenolic resin. On a white or light door, that line shows wherever the laminate is cut or two pieces meet.

Solid-core (also called colour-core or matched-core) laminate uses a core coloured to match the surface, so edges and joints look clean. It costs more, and it's worth it for light colours, handle-free doors with exposed edges, and anywhere two panels meet at a corner. On a woodgrain, the core is one matched tone rather than the grain, so the edge looks clean rather than "solid wood".

Brands offering it here include Formica Cora, Epoch (over 200 solid-core designs), Lamitak Solid Core, and EDL's Kiravaio series, whose light "ecru" core softens the line rather than removing it.

How to choose

  • White or light doors? Ask for solid-core laminate, so there's no dark line at the edges.
  • Handle-free or dark matt doors? Choose an anti-fingerprint or super-matt surface such as FENIX, Greenlam's anti-fingerprint ranges or EDL Aptico.
  • Tall wardrobe or long feature wall? 10-foot sheets (Topmix, Lamitak, EDL) avoid a joint across the panel.
  • Bedrooms and kids' rooms? Look for Singapore Green Label or GREENGUARD Gold, which certify low emissions.
  • Wet areas and worktops? Compact laminate is solid all the way through and handles water better.
  • See it in daylight. Colours on screen and under shop lights look different. Bring a sample home and look at it in your room.

Looking after laminate

  • Wipe with a damp soft cloth and mild detergent, then dry. Don't flood the joints.
  • Avoid scouring pads, steel wool, abrasive powder and bleach or strong acid cleaners.
  • Use a trivet under hot pots, and a board for cutting. Long exposure to heat can lift the laminate from the board.

What we use at Teddy

We're not tied to one brand. We build with laminate from Formica, Topmix, Epoch and others, choosing the brand and range for your design, and offer solid-core laminate when edges matter. Doors are blockboard (木芯板), the cabinet body is plywood with a coloured PVC face, and every visible edge is ABS banded by machine.

Not sure which finish suits your home? Send us a photo of your room and the look you like, and we'll suggest a few laminates and bring samples.
